Helen Groff Ransom

Helen Groff Ransom

Helen Groff Ransom passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.  She was a resident of the Wesley Health Care Center.

Born on May 13, 1923, she was the daughter of Truman and Margaret Groff, and a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs.  After graduating from Saratoga Springs High School, Helen worked at the Van Raalte shirt factory in the city, while earning her degree from the Albany Business College.

Helen married George Ransom in 1967 and they built a successful business together in Watervliet, with George running the operations and Helen managing the office.  Upon selling the business, they retired together to Ocala, Florida in the winter months.  They enjoyed golf and entertaining in their home until George passed in 1994.  Helen remained close to her siblings and their families ever since.  She was a strong woman with a no-nonsense, direct approach which earned her the respect and admiration of those who knew her.  Beneath it was a kind and generous spirit, who became a mother figure to her many nieces and nephews.

Her parents and siblings Howard Groff, Carolyn Brown and Janet Nassetta predeceased her.  She is survived by her sister, Jane French; nephews John Kuznia, Christopher Kuznia, Colin Brown, Jeffrey Brown, Otis Groff, and Howard Groff; and nieces Jan Parton, Deborah Millis, Peggy Schober, Tami Rivas and Lori Atherton.

A graveside ceremony will be held at the Groff family plot at Green Ridge Cemetery in the springtime.  Friends who wish to attend may contact John Kuznia at (518) 583-3080.

Services under the direction of Simone Funeral Home, 402 Maple Ave, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518) 584-2240
